lake Kol-Tor
The Kel-Tor tract is a small offshoot from the Kegety gorge, which is notable for its beautiful mountain lake, located at an altitude of 2700 meters. The lake is of landslide origin, has no direct flow and goes underground, breaking out of the ground a few kilometers below. Most of the year the lake is in a frozen state, and in summer the water does not warm up more than 5 degrees Celsius, so it is of little use for swimming. Kel-Tor is notable for the stunning turquoise color of the lake; a particularly beautiful combination of colors can be found there in summer.
The length of the walking track to the lake is 8 kilometers one way. The trail is clearly visible, so getting lost will be quite problematic. The road itself is extremely picturesque: it starts from a rather flat and treeless section, gradually leaving higher and higher on the wooded slopes, and then on real high-mountain alpine meadows. There is a small ford along the way. There are plenty of places for parking or picnics.
Three kilometers above the lake, a zone of moraines and glaciers begins. There are also several passes along which you can go to the Shamsi Tuyuk or the Kegety gorge. The passes are quite difficult to pass, therefore their visit is recommended only for trained tourists.
